In this kitchen space, originally, we had a window here that was not centered well, and it had a really large wall of built-in cabinets that weren’t particularly functional.
When we removed the cabinets that were here, we found a steel column and beam supporting a fireplace upstairs. So that was a fun engineering challenge to make that go away so that we could accommodate our freezer on the left-hand side and our fridge on the right-hand side.
The butler’s pantry had what I would refer to as a 1980s projecting garden window that had glass on three sides that also didn’t feel appropriate to the age and vintage of this house. So now it has the same leaded glass detail that’s also then repeated in the upper cabinets in the breakfast room, the upper cabinets above the refrigerator and freezer.
The real showpiece in this kitchen is the gorgeous French La Cornue range, custom ordered in the colors that the client wanted, along with a beautiful Zellige mosaic backsplash. It’s interesting but still very classic feeling.
The homeowners at one point lived in Asia and they had a back kitchen in their house there and she loved it. So, behind these pocket doors is a small range, a dishwasher, and a small refrigerator. So, if you are entertaining and you want your kitchen to be pretty, you can use that kitchen.
