Winnetka Shingle Style Mansion Clubhouse
The impetus for this entire addition to an early 1900s Shingle Style mansion in Winnetka, a suburb of Chicago, was this amazing clubhouse. It includes a golf simulator, full bar with kegerator, lounge area and access to the outdoor fireplace, pool and pickleball court, as designed by SSDB Architect Sarah Gooden.

When the client came to us initially for this project, one of the requirements was a golf simulator, and it was originally going to be in the basement. There were some tricky soil conditions here and it was not cost-effective to dig down the basement to provide the simulator. We pivoted, in working with our client, and ended up demoing the pool that used to be here and doing an addition that has the golf simulator on the first floor. So now it’s a space that everyone can use. This addition has changed how the property feels and we felt like was a better use of value than a complicated structural dig-out of the basement.
This room is the clubhouse. It was the reason behind this whole half of the project, of the addition to house a big lounge area with multiple TVs and a bar. So the golf simulator is tucked off to the side so it is not the first thing you see when you walk through. It’s got a beautiful green paint color and some lovely finishes. Bar has a kegerator plus shelves for liquor bottle storage and glassware. We have a scenic bifold door from Marvin, so this entire wall opens up so you can be outside at the fireplace, entertaining, watching the golf simulator, or watching TV.
We are standing at the very end of the addition. We have created this pergola detail as part of the porch for this golf simulator. It matches the original pergola that was around the tennis court. So we are tying in the new architecture to what was already here.
