A recent New York Times article detailed the surge in interest for trades jobs from young adults, partially fueled by AI concerns and the rising cost of college. Fields like electrical, plumbing, HVAC, welding, and construction are generating new interest, boosting trade-school and apprenticeship enrollments. For many young adults, concerns about student debt and job security have prompted them to reconsider the traditional four-year college path and seek opportunities where they can develop tangible, in-demand skills.

Last year, SSDB welcomed a local high school student with an interest in the skilled trades for a week-long introduction to the industry. As part of the experience, he spent time with the SSDB team and gained firsthand exposure to a range of construction disciplines, including HVAC, electrical, steel, and audiovisual systems. The experience provided an opportunity to see the collaboration, technical expertise, and craftsmanship that go into building a custom home.
Since his week with SSDB, he has graduated high school and started a job as a union sheet metal worker, joining the next generation of skilled trades employees who will shape the homes and buildings to come.
SSDB, in part, also founded Revolution Workshop, a social enterprise structured to provide the unemployed with carpentry and woodworking training, while addressing the dire need for more laborers in our trades. Through a demand-driven approach and in partnership with union partners and potential employers for the trainees, Revolution Workshop provides training and job placement in the construction sector to dedicated individuals from our city’s most under-resourced communities. They develop a consistent pipeline of highly-skilled, collaborative, and reliable construction workers who have the tools and resources they need to succeed. It is our sincere hope that RW trainees leave the course feeling more confident, inspired and employed!
