Very first SSD+B clients commission second project – 23 years later – as Empty-Nesters.
Transitioning a client from the large, dark wood Prairie-style home we built for them in Evanston to a modern, clean bright-white condominium in Wilmette was deeply satisfying. Having created the home where they raised their kids, our long-term relationship with the family was invaluable as we designed and built their new condo, focused on enjoying retirement and entertaining grandkids.
For this project, the client came to us with design plans that were over-complicated and clearly going to cost much more than necessary. Taking full advantage of our integrated architecture-construction team, we were able to design a new approach that lowered the budget and tightened the timeline.
The stunning vistas of Lake Michigan inspired open space and family-oriented entertainment areas with generous sight lines to the water. The flow from room-to-room is guided by custom architectural details and reflective surfaces that envelop everything in light.
Custom Condo Architecture
As this home is in a high-rise condominium building, each element had to be designed conscientiously to allow for ease of delivery, on a flawless timeline, while still bringing the desired impact. Staying nimble and resourceful are definitely parts of that formula. In one example, cabinets from a company in Brazil (that were ordered prior to our taking the job) arrived from the factory with some “wrong” details. We re-crafted them on-site, instead of reordering and enduring additional months of waiting, so that the project still delivered beautifully, and on time.
The family mantra of “be creative and use your own brain” has stuck with us and we are proud to have applied it throughout the journey of these enriching projects with clients we adore.
